Capstone Weekly Progress 4/1/11

Capstone
GPS Leadership Outcomes
Reflection
Name: _____________Flor Eguiarte_______
Date: __4/1/11________
Project: ________In School Recycling_____________________
What is the goal of the project?  How has it changed over the course of Capstone?
·        The goal of “In School Recycling” is to promote awareness in our school about how important it is to recycle. We want everyone to contribute by recycling plastic bottles. The project has changed over time due to the lack of “official materials”. We wanted to get the official recycling bins, but we did not count with money to buy them, so we bought regular bins and prayed them with the recycling logo.
·        We have a new goal now. Mr. Lee’s club eagle service wants to work with us to make our project bigger. Mr. Lee wants to recycle trash and cans. We have gotten together and came up with ideas. Now our goal is to collect as much as possible in these last months of school.
Your Capstone Project is a tool for you to demonstrate your college readiness and global competency. Use the GPS Global Leadership Performance Outcomes to evaluate your college readiness and global competency.
·        We have not reached our main goal, which is to recycle at least 500 plastic bottles each week. We are not college ready but we are not that far behind. We are lacking global connections, and the lack of making awareness.
·        With Mr. Lee’s help we will reach our goal of making awareness because now we will be working with more students.
Investigate the World: Produce New Global Knowledge.  Students investigate the world, including their immediate environment.
·        Texas is not known for recycling as much as china. Few people recycle due to the lack of information.
How have you incorporated this element of the GPS into your Capstone project?
·        We are trying to make awareness in our school. We are trying to encourage students to recycle and show how this can impact the environment.
Where are your strengths in this area?  Why are they strengths?  Where is this demonstrated in your Capstone?
·        The strengths in our project are that many students drink water and they are left with empty water bottles. This contributes to our project because they can recycle those bottles.
·        Now the biggest strength we have is the cooperation of Mr. Lee’s club. This will majorly contribute to our project because we will recycle other materials and a greater amount. We have not progressed as much because we are just two people recycling.
Where are your weaknesses in this area?  Why do you consider these to be weaknesses?  How do you plan on correcting these weaknesses?
·        Our weakness in our project is that we only have three recycling bins and there are over twenty classrooms. We could not afford to buy twenty bins.
·        The weakness in our project is that people do not read the posters we have posted for the recycling bins. We have placed recycling bins for plastic bottles but people throw trash in there even though it says “plastic bottles”.
Where are your strengths in this area?  Why are they strengths?  Where is this demonstrated in your Capstone?
·        The strengths are that we have made many posters to signal where the recycling bins are and what is to be placed there.
Communicate Ideas: Connect & Collaborate Across Boundaries.  Students communicate and collaborate effectively with diverse audiences.
·        We have not communicated with our school about our project; we have not made them aware or the importance of recycling.
·        This week we have posted “recycling” posters around the school and where the recycling bins are located.

I rate my self an 8 because we are making progress, we have been recycling plastic bottles and we have increased the number recycled material.
Our plan is to work with Mr. Lee’s club and make our project bigger and more successful. We will be working on our methodology as we begin to work with the students from Eagle Service.
